Trend Alert: Paithani Saree Inspired Cakes | By Tanvi Sovani Palshikar

A few days back one of our team members received a few pics from her mom who lives in Pune and is part of a local ‘Saree’ group. Last weekend they had a get together to celebrate their group’s one year anniversary. All the ladies in our team, being saree enthusiasts, wanted to see the pictures. And so we did! We just stared at the picture of a beautiful Paithani saree that was kept on a center table along with some Kolhapuri jewellery. We kept staring at it for few mins as almost all of us have a Paithani saree on our ‘must-have-sarees’ list. But then a closer look revealed what it really was. We gasped, looked at the picture again and gasped some more. It was a cake! Yes, an all edible cake!

So we got in touch with the amazingly talented Cake designer Tanvi Palshikar from Pune who makes these incredible cakes. We sat her down to know a little more about her and the story behind these gorgeous cakes. What started out as a hobby became a full-time passion for this interior designer turned cake designer. This self-taught baker started taking orders after her friends and family encouraged her to sell her cakes. ” I started baking as a hobby and learnt everything from scratch by watching online videos. The cakes I made were so good that everyone I knew felt that I should monetize the idea. And that’s when I went the commercial way and coined the name Cakilicious “says Tanvi with a glint in her eyes.

When asked about the first saree cake that she made, she says ” I made my first saree cake for my Late grandmother. It was not a Paithani saree cake, though. I designed the cake to look like her favourite saree complete with the flower gajra that she wore in her hair everyday. She was absolutely delighted when she saw the cake I made for her” says an overwhelmed Tanvi.

She adds “One fine day, I received an order from a client who wanted a cake for her mother-in-law. By then, I have started customising the cakes as per client requirements. So when she told me that her mother-in-law loves sarees, we decided on a Paithani saree cake design with the pallu open. She also sent a few pics of the jewellery her mom-in-law owns. And that’s how I made a Paithani saree cake with edible Kolhapuri jewellery. The pictures were shared on facebook which went viral and made me famous. Not just cake lovers but saree connoisseaurs across the world have been showering me with praises. And it hasn’t stopped since” beams the young entrepreneur.

We have never seen cakes done this way. What innovation?! Honestly, we feel they are works of art! Luckily for us, she agreed to share some pictures of her creations. Here is some outstanding wedding cake inspiration for us to devour (Pun intended) –

As of now, these hand-crafted cakes are available only for Pune residents. But in future she dreams of serving customers across India. Who knows, very soon, she might be baking a bespoke Kanjeevaram saree cake for a Madurai bride! Quite possible!

Stay Happy!!!
