Sneak Peek At A Beautiful Pre-Wedding Ceremony – Haldi / Nalungu

By TGB Desk / On October 19th, 2016

Hello there Ladies, I hope you had a good day! I have talked about Sixteen adornments (Solah Shringar) of a bride a few weeks back and so thought of writing about a ritual that precedes the Solah Shringar. It’s called Haldi in North India and Nalungu in South India. This is another ritual which excites the ladies in the family after mehendi.

This ritual is observed in almost all of the Hindu weddings across India with little differences. Some communities require both the bride and groom to be present at the same place for this ritual where as some communities conduct this ritual separately at their respective homes. It is generally held a couple of days before the actual wedding and the bride is not allowed to leave the house after this ceremony.

Haldi / Nalugu is a cleansing or purification ritual and is usually done in an open space. As part of this ritual, first the bride’s hair is oiled by the older married women of the family. An organic paste is made out of turmeric, sandalwood powder and rose water exclusively for this purpose. All the married women of the household first apply kumkum on the forehead of the bride and then apply this paste on her face, hands and feet. This has got strong and refreshing scent and is believed to have antiseptic properties as per Ayurveda. Once this is done, married ladies offer aarti to the bride to ward off evil eye.

The bride then washes her hair with natural hair wash (sheekakai or soap nuts) and takes bath with ubtan or natural bath powder/scrub. This scrub is made out of natural ingredients like gram flour, turmeric, herbs, rose petals etc which is then mixed with rose water or milk to make a paste. This natural bath powder imparts a beautiful glow to the bride-to-be.
